About
Developmental Editing means taking a macro view of your work. Also called "content editing" or "substantive editing", this type of editing is at the "big picture level." I'll check the work to make sure the piece meets its goals, for the audience, for the publisher, and for you.Â
In a dev edit, I do a first complete read of your manuscript, without making any corrections on the manuscript, and prepare editorial notes that will include:
Review of genre, voice, style, and tone to match the target audience
Review of the chapter’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas where they may be improved
Noting questions that need answers, or incomplete thoughts
Noting inconsistencies, and missing or excessive elements.
Review of titles, headings, sequence and TOC
Overall feedback
During a developmental edit I'm not looking at grammar or punctuation, but instead I want to make sure your story works.
